Age of Rust is a single-player action-adventure game built on Enjin. To advance, the player must solve puzzles and gather NFT prizes backed by Enjin Coin (ENJ).
In June 2021, Steam provided a free beta playtest of the game but later opted against hosting blockchain games and de-platformed Age of Rust in October of that year.
Being de-platformed harms the blockchain game sector, but the Age of Rust may not be over yet. Here’s all we know so far about the game, which is planned to be released in 2022.
Highlights:
Played on browser
Combat, stealth, and puzzles
Treasure hunts
Will launch in three seasons
Supposedly 100 hours of gameplay
What is the Age of Rust?
Post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, and cyberpunk are all excellent descriptors for SpacePirate Games’ upcoming title Age of Rust, which is based on Enjin.
Set in the year 4424, the player is thrust into a world in which humans have lost a war, colony ships are not proceeding as intended, and there is an enemy that people cannot beat. A post-apocalyptic environment is rather usual. Players must explore abandoned ships and dungeons while avoiding renegade machines.
It’s a story-driven puzzle game in which players win real-world in-game objects backed by ENJ, an Ethereum token. ENJ is utilized to support the value of NFTs issued within Enjin’s ecosystem.
The game is scheduled to be released in 2022, and developers are currently looking for a distribution platform to host it.
Playing Age of Rust
The game will be released in three seasons. Season 1 costs $14.99 to play, and unlocking Seasons 2 and 3 requires spending Rustbits, the in-game money.
You only need the Enjin wallet and the initial payment to play the bare-bones edition. To unlock higher-level puzzles with larger rewards, though, you must first collect tokens. Claiming NFTs also grants you access to more puzzles, however, their supply is limited.
Gameplay
- Adventure progress: Advance the story by finding a hidden level or unlocking a door.
- Crypto puzzles: These require specific blockchain-based inventory (NFTs) and can issue cryptocurrency rewards. There are four Bitcoin (BTC) and 35,000+ ENJ/NFT bounties to be found.
- Treasure hunt. The grand goal hidden behind clues spread across the game is a combined treasure trove of a 20-BTC reward.
You must have gold card token NFTs in your character’s inventory to unlock specific high-reward crypto puzzles. According to Enjin, some of these tokens are granted for completing specified tasks.
SpacePirate Games claims 100 hours of playtime, but we’ll see. Because developers have previously inflated gaming hours, we’re taking the “100 hours” promise with a grain of salt.
Age of Rust Tokenomics
Rustbits (RUSTBITS) are the primary Age of Rust tokens. You obtain them by completing the game’s puzzles and tasks. Each Rustbit NFT is backed by an Enjin coin (worth 0.001 ENJ) and comes in a limited edition of 37 million.
The game and its tokens will eventually be moved to Enjin JumpNet, eliminating the requirement for users to pay transaction or mining fees. Until that transition, the game’s tokens are now off-chain.
How to Earn on Age of Rust
According to the makers, the game is not a real “play-to-earn” game, but rather a “play-to-own” game.
Players earn either bitcoin (ENJ/BTC) or a restricted quantity of NFTs as incentives. The NFTs allow entry to new parts of the storyline, and new bounty-hunting challenges, and are essential for later in the game access to the larger treasure-hunting rewards.
Items obtained through gameplay can be sold on secondary markets, and ENJ backs the NFTs.
NFTs on Age of Rust
In Age of Rust, NFTs come in a variety of forms and can be bought, sold, and exchanged in secondary markets.
NFTs provide players with everything from special powers and weaponry to more levels and stuff to enjoy. Unique weapons and abilities help players reach sections of the game that they would not otherwise be able to reach.
Throughout the three seasons, there are over 37,000 NFT tokens, and the in-game Rustbits money may also be purchased, sold, and exchanged on secondary marketplaces.
How to get and sell NFTs on Age of Rust
Getting the NFTs in the game requires solving puzzles and completing treasure hunts. Players can buy and sell the in-game NFTs on secondary marketplaces, including OpenSea and the Enjin NFT marketplace. But, we don’t know much more than that yet.
To get the in-game NFTs, you need an Enjin wallet connected to your Age of Rust account.
Multiverse Founders Token
The Multiverse Founders Token (MFT) was created by Enjin and delivered to early Enjin users via QR scans and various mini-games. Players who own this token gain access to the Age of Rust early beta.
About the developers
Chris Loverme is the CEO and founder of SpacePirate Games, and his resume is outstanding to say the least. He previously worked as a network engineer at NASA for nearly four years. His other areas of expertise include cyber security and IT consulting.
SpacePirate Games was created in June 2017, although there is little information available about the company, which just describes itself as a “Blockchain game development company.” The most recent post on the company’s official Medium blog, from 2021, was about how Age of Rust is now available on Steam – it’s really out of date.
Furthermore, SpacePirate games used to have their own website (spacepirate.io), but it now redirects to the main Age of Rust website. SpacePirate Games does not have an official presence on Loverme’s LinkedIn.
We do wish there was more information about the firm, such as its size, personnel, or other projects it is working on, especially since Rustbits is intended to be the primary currency of future SpacePirate Games ventures.
Conclusion
The the Age of Rust notion is intriguing. Many blockchain games feature pixelated graphics, passive game modes,, and monster auto battles. A single-player, story-driven game may entice more traditional players to participate in blockchain gaming.
We’re hesitant to declare the game will be released in 2022 because Age of Rust still lacks a platform. The Steam barrier isn’t good for morale, and SpacePirate’s Medium blog has been silent for almost four months, leaving us wondering of the developer’s next actions.
